1. a) Residential schools were schools sponsored by the government to educate and convert aboriginal kids to Christianity. They were also a way to assimilate aboriginal kids into Euro-Canadian culture and society. 1. b) Assimilation was the act of trying to make the aboriginal kids fit in a Canadian society. It was kind of a way to convert them from their own culture to a Euro-Canadian culture. It was a way for them to learn how to blend in. Just a Lake

Image
Just A Lake  In isolation lays a wonder  The enchanting moon shinning from above  Mysterious trees that remain undiscovered  A secret lays beyond waiting to be found  Only a daring soul shall disturb the scene  And uncover what was once hidden An adventure awaits in every direction The blue lake still and undisturbed  A place that puts you in awe  With its untouched beauty  A night not soon forgotten  In a place soon to be found by the bravest of spirits  Lays what appears to be just a lake

Poetic devices: The Sun is Burning Gases

Image
The Sun is Burning Gases (Loss of a Good Friend) - Cathleen McFarland I was young when 17 was a number Too high to count The sun was the miracle Spinning sorcerer That melted my crayons Into bright wax rivers. A golden-skinned princess lived there Nightly in my mind, When stars and moon were marginal connect-the-dots, different everytime- Beyond the realms of man. Now I’m 17 And even infinity is A place I can define. Man has touched the moon - Now stretching to the stars. I know the sun is burning gases My princess long since turned to ashes. Alliteration: " The sun was the miracle Spinning sorcerer" Personification: " Man has touched the moon - Now stretching to the stars." Metaphor: " When stars and moon were marginal connect-the-dots" Imagery: " That melted my crayons Into bright wax rivers."   I think this poem is about how things change as you grow up. When the writer was younger she had a vivid imaginat...

Poetic Devices

Metaphor Comparing two unlike things without using like or as and by stating that one object is something it obviously isn't. My example of a metaphor is: He was not a cheetah.  Imagery Appealing   to the five senses in someway : sight, sound, scent, touch and taste. This allows the reader (you!) to picture actually being there.  My example of imagery: The waves lapped at my feet as the sun set on the horizon.  Alliteration  When two or more words in a line of poetry begin with the same consonant sounds. My example of alliteration is:  Brianna baked banana bread before breakfast. Personification When human qualities or action are given to inanimate or nonhuman objects.  My example of personification is: The waves growled angrily.

See It Through

See It Through By  Edgar Guest   When you’re up against a trouble,     Meet it squarely, face to face; Lift your chin and set your shoulders,     Plant your feet and take a brace. When it’s vain to try to dodge it,     Do the best that you can do; You may fail, but you may conquer,     See it through! Black may be the clouds about you     And your future may seem grim, But don’t let your nerve desert you;     Keep yourself in fighting trim. If the worst is bound to happen,     Spite of all that you can do, Running from it will not save you,     See it through! Even hope may seem but futile,     When with troubles you’re beset, But remember you are facing     Just what other men have met. You may fail, but fall still fighting;     Don’t give up, whate’er you do; Eyes front, head high to the finish.     See it through! Person...
